We were able to get so much done this week in Math Lab. Every grade level did some number sense and/or basic fact strategy practice and were introduced to the Singapore Bar Model Drawing strategy.
Kindergarten: We worked on subitizing (ability to see a small amount of objects and know how many there are without counting) using dot cards. We also did some visual problem solving that compared amounts. The students sang a song that let them exercise while writing numbers in the air and a song about the days of the week. The students were given either a number or a dot card and they had to find their match and share with the class.
1st Grade: We worked on subitizing using five-frames. They did visual problem solving that involved making an estimate based on a benchmark. The students sang and exercised to a song where they counted by 2s. The students got to go on a scavenger hunt for 5 Frames and write addition sentences to match them.
2nd Grade & 3rd Grade: We reviewed vocabulary words that go with addition facts (addends and sum). We played a game to practice the strategy of adding one more in addition facts. I introduced them to Model Drawing for problem solving and we did 2 problems together that involved addition.
4th & 5th Grade: We worked on our 5 facts with the strategy of Using Ten Facts. It is great for facts like 24 X 5. The kids can do 24X10=240 in their head and then split 240 in half to get the answer of 120. They played a game to work on their 5 facts. I introduced them to model drawing and we did 2 problems together that involved multiplication.
